Clutter! Most of us have some – many of us have lots. Have you ever felt like your home is running you rather than that you are running your home?
Is the vision you had for your living spaces when you bought/rented the property a dim and distant memory?
We can find ourselves in cluttered, disorganised, spaces for a whole host of reasons. Being overwhelmed by major life events, such as divorce or bereavement or a bout of ill-health. Perhaps life has become so busy, you just do not have the time or energy to keep on top of it all. Or maybe you just love to shop!
Some of the scenarios below (and there are many more) may have some resonance for you.
Does anyone entering your home have to squeeze through the narrow gap left by a bulging coat rack and assorted abandoned footwear that prevents you opening the door more than 18″?
Do you/family/friends end up eating meals on your laps because your dining table has turned into your home office/ book store/craft table/post room/general dumping ground and occasional cat bed?
If you have kids, are their bedrooms full of toys and games they have had since the year dot even though they are now in their teens or have decamped to University?
Is your own room so rammed with clothes, shoes and various flotsam that it is just not a relaxing place to be?
Would you love to redecorate but cannot face having to move piles of “stuff” in order to begin?
Does it matter? Emphatically no. It is your home to live in as you wish. However it does begin to matter if you feel that the situation is negatively impacting your life. Then perhaps the time has come to change the status quo, re-order and clarify your spaces and liberate your home and yourself from a situation that is not serving you.
How to begin? That is where I come in. I work with people to establish the background that has brought about the situation. Usually we will begin with an informal phone consultation. We discuss what they want to change and why. I will often go to their home or if this is not possible for one party or the other, they will send me photographs or footage of the problem spaces. I suggest they keep the latter to do a “compare and contrast” for their own satisfaction at a later date. From there, we jointly work out what strategy or strategies will work for them to begin the activity of reclaiming and reordering their spaces. Some people like to “go it alone,” whereas others prefer to have me there in a supporting/encouraging role and some go for a half way house, where I support them through a decluttering session by phone. After a few “sessions,” I will, again, ask for more photographs or footage or make a personal visit, if preferred by the client, to establish what progress they are making and how they are feeling about it. Finally, we will have a chat about what they and anyone else living in the home can do to prevent the situation occurring again.
Decluttering is like a breath of fresh air for you and your home, allowing in new energy, new ideas and the establishment or re-establishment of a positive relationship with your living space and making it into the haven that you deserve.
